Accelerated Pathways to Medicine
Many international students enroll in our accelerated medical programs, including our direct entry MD program and our premed program for high school graduates. Here’s what you should know about these two popular, student-centered pathways to medicine:
Direct Entry MD Program – This is an attractive choice for global students who have Advanced Level Science credits and an IB diploma or who have graduated from the 10+2 system in India and Nepal. It’s also a great option for students with undergraduate degrees outside of the sciences from countries like the United States and Canada. TAU Guyana’s direct entry MD program, or 5-year MD Program, builds upon previous science education with coursework in essential subjects like physiology and anatomy before launching into more advanced classes and clinical rotations.
Here are more details about the timeline of our direct entry MD program:
- The first year of the direct entry, 5-year MD program at our Caribbean international medical school covers pre-med coursework.
- Years two and three focus on Basic Sciences, culminating in advanced classes in Pharmacology and Pathology. We offer our students early clinical exposure through preceptorships during the Basic Sciences portion of their degree plans.
- The final two years of the direct entry MD program consist of clinical rotations at our teaching hospitals in Guyana or the United States. These rotations offer exposure to critical areas such as Family Medicine, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Psychiatry.
Pre-med Program for High School Graduates – Right out of high school, admitted students can begin their accelerated pre-med coursework consisting of three semesters of medical prerequisites. This coursework can be completed in just 18 months, after which students may enroll in our MD program or apply to MD programs elsewhere.
Our premed classes are designed to be the equivalent of those needed for admission to North American medical schools and esteemed schools around the world. Subjects include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English, Statistics, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Medical Terminology, and Communication Skills. Premedical courses expose students to rigorous subject matter in the sciences and social sciences, honing their reading, writing, quantitative reasoning, and critical thinking abilities.
